These sounds, a mixture of grunts, scrapes, and thumps, are associated with different behaviors and may be related to communication. The black sea bass can grow up to 24 inches and weigh up to 8 pounds, living as long as 15 years. Black sea bass can be found between Florida and Cape Cod, with occasional wanderers North and South of their range. An amendment was enacted in 2006 to end overfishing for black sea bass in the South Atlantic by gradually reducing fishing mortality for the species.
