There are nearly 300 different species of genadiers. They have a large, round head, big eyes, a sharp snout and a long, scaly tail. Giant Grenadier, Pacific Grenadier and Shoulder Spot Grenadier are commonly caught in the Pacific Ocean in California, Oregon and Washington, just off the continental shelves. The dark brown Pacific grenadier has a tall dorsal finand a low fin that runs along its back and all the way around its tail. According to the environemental group, Oceana, this species "spends most of its time near the seabed searching for food but it sometimes swims up into midwater, where it can catch squid, shrimp, and small fish."
